Chilika lake Bird Sanctuary

Chilika Lake, sprawling across an area of over 1,100 sq. kms. During monsoons is Asia's largest brackish lagoon. It is a unique assemblage of marine, brackish and fresh water eco-system with estuarine characters. It has the richest variety of aquatic fauna and is a safe haven for a large number of endangered species. During winters, the lake attracts over one million migratory birds-including osprey, grey legged geese, herons, cranes and flamingos. It is perhaps the largest congregations of aquatic birds in the sub-continent. Vhilika was also designated as a "Ramsar site" i.e a wetland of International Importance. The Nalaban, one of the biggest islands within the lagoon is notified as a Bird Sanctuary. The best time to visit is form October to June. Boating and fishing facilities are available at the lake, which is very rich in fish. One can view the dolphins at Chilika mouth near Satpara. For crushing and visiting the islands, OTDC provides motor launches at Barkul and Rambha. Other attractions are beautiful beach along Rajhansa and sacred kalijai temple. Chilika is also known for Sunset and Sunrise views.

The nearest airport for Chilika is Bhubaneswar and the nearest railhead is Puri(50 kms.). From Puri one can easily reach Satpara by road, while from Bhubaneswar one can reach Barkul on NH 5, the other entry point to Chilika. Chilika is best explored by boat and most of the popular sites can be covered in a day. The best time to visit is between October and February.

Kalijai Temple is located on an island in Chilika Lake. It is considered to be the abode of the Goddess Kalijai. Highly revered by the local populace, the deity has been venerated in the local folklores and legends. The island provides an excellent destination for pilgrims as well as tourists. Every year in January, a huge gala fair is held during the festival of Makar Sankranti.


The main attraction of the place is Two Kundas (Swimming pools) with pure and cold water. People are coming here to take a dip bath in it. People generally visit this place in summer. He perennial spring which flows from Eastern Ghats through Badaghati Mountain is the source of water for this swimming pool.


Banpur is a Town , Block & Tahasil (taluka )and a notified area council in Khurda (khordha)district in the state of Orissa( Odisha ), India. Banpur is a small town situated. 42 km from Rambha ,13 km from Barakul and 5 km from Balugaon,infact it is very near to lake Chilika .
